the village of Ghazalguzar. The dam site lies about 180 Km southeast of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on the Vakhsh River, one of the major tributaries of the Amu Darya River. The Phase I studies commenced in 1984 and were approved by the Ministry of Energy of the Soviet Union in 1986. The phase II studies were conducted from 1986 to 1989 and were subsequently received final approval in 1990. Pursuant to the agreement between the Governments of Iran and Tajikistan, the project was awarded to Sangab Company under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. In 2006, the engineering consultancy services and construction supervision for the project were assigned to Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company.
