Kama Hydropower and Irrigation Project

The study area of project is situated within the Kama and Goshta districts of Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. The project area lies between latitude 34° 20´ and 34° 30´ North and longitude 70° 30´ and 70° 50´ East. The area is bordered by Pakistan to the north and east, the Kabul River to the south, and Kunar River to the west.

Project Background

In 1973, the feasibility studies for the irrigation development of the Kama Plain and hydropower generation were conducted by Sanyu Consultants Inc. of Japan. Subsequently, in 1975, the feasibility studies were further developed and a preliminary project scheme was prepared by Electrowatt Engineering Services Company.

Project Objectives

  •  To supply water for over approximately 12,500 hectares of agricultural land comprising 7,500 hectares of irrigation rehabilitation and 5,000 hectares of new irrigation development in the Kama, Gardab, and Goshta Plains.
  • To harness the hydropower potential of the river system for the generation of electricity.
