The Karun 4 Dam axis is located at kilometer 670 of the Karun River, downstream of the confluence of the Armand and Bazfat rivers; upstream of the confluence of the Karun and Manj rivers; in Chaharmahal Bakhtiari province – 160 kilometers from the Shahrekord-Izeh road.
The preliminary studies were conducted by Harza Engineering Company in 1967 within the framework of the water resources development plan as well as the comprehensive water resources planning of the Karun River basin. In 1993, the phase I studies were assigned to Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company. The contract for the phase II studies was concluded between Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company and Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company in 1997.
