The Sangtuda-2 Dam and Hydropower Plant Project is located in southwestern Tajikistan, within Dangarinskiy District of Khatlon Region, near the village of Ghazalguzar. The dam site lies about 180 Km southeast of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on the Vakhsh River, one of the major tributaries of the Amu Darya River. The Vakhsh River with a catchment area of 32,150 Km2 and an average annual discharge of 630 m3/s, is one of the largest perennial rivers in Tajikistan.
The Sangtuda-2 Dam constitutes an integral component of the nine-dam hydropower cascade on the Vakhsh River, of which five dams are located upstream of the project site and three dams are situated downstream.
The initial studies were assigned in the late 1980s to the Tashkent branch of Hydroproject Institute of the former Soviet Union. The Phase I studies commenced in 1984 and were approved by the Ministry of Energy of the Soviet Union in 1986. The phase II studies were conducted from 1986 to 1989 and were subsequently received final approval in 1990. Pursuant to the agreement between the Governments of Iran and Tajikistan, the project was awarded to Sangab Company under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. In 2006, the engineering consultancy services and construction supervision for the project were assigned to Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company.
