The project comprises a rockfill reservoir dam with clay core, water transfer tunnel, hydropower plant, diversion dam, and irrigation and drainage networks for the Miandarband and Bilehvar plains.
The project site is located 45 Km south of Sanandaj City and 90 Km north of Kermanshah City, on the Geveh Rud River, at geographical coordinates of 55o 46’ E longitude and 35o 34’ N latitude.
The phase I studies were completed in 1983, followed by the completion of the phase II studies in 1989. The first contract for the water transfer tunnel commenced in 1992. The contract for the dam and water transfer tunnel was implemented in 1998. The dam was impounded in 2004, and the water transfer tunnel was commissioned and put into operation in 2008.
