Gavoshan Dam & Hydropower Plant

The project comprises a rockfill reservoir dam with clay core, water transfer tunnel, hydropower plant, diversion dam, and irrigation and drainage networks for the Miandarband and Bilehvar plains.
The project site is located 45 Km south of Sanandaj City and 90 Km north of Kermanshah City, on the Geveh Rud River, at geographical coordinates of 55o 46 E longitude and 35o 34 N latitude.

The phase I studies were completed in 1983, followed by the completion of the phase II studies in 1989. The first contract for the water transfer tunnel commenced in 1992. The contract for the dam and water transfer tunnel was implemented in 1998. The dam was impounded in 2004, and the water transfer tunnel was commissioned and put into operation in 2008.

  • Irrigation of agricultural lands in the Miandarband and Bilehvar plains, covering an area of 31,000 hectares.
  • Supply of potable water to the cities of Kermanshah and Kamyaran, amounting to 63 million cubic meters per year.
  • Hydropower generation with an average annual energy production of 11 GWh.
  • Construction of water transfer tunnel, including access tunnels, with a total length of 23.5 Km, considering the variable geological conditions.
  • Use of blasting, semi-mechanized (Roadheader), and fully mechanized excavation methods.
  • Employment of Open TBM.
  • Transfer of water from the Sirvan River Basin to the Krkheh River Basin via a 20-Km transfer tunnel, without the use of mechanical and pumping equipment.
