Landmark Water Transfer and Hydropower Project Successfully Commissioned
The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant water resources and hydropower developments, has been officially inaugurated and placed into operation, marking a major milestone in the successful delivery of a flagship international project by Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company.
Designed to transfer water from water-abundant regions to water-scarce areas while generating clean hydroelectric power, the project represents a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s sustainable water resources management and renewable energy development.
A Landmark Achievement in Engineering
The Uma Oya Project incorporates some of the region’s most technically demanding engineering works, including:
- Two Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams connected through an approximately 15.5-kilometer water conveyance tunnel;
- An underground hydropower scheme featuring a 120 MW power station;
- A high-pressure vertical shaft exceeding 600 meters in depth, constructed to convey water to the underground powerhouse; and
- An integrated water transfer system designed to improve water availability for agricultural development while supporting renewable electricity generation.
The underground powerhouse is among the deepest of its kind, reflecting the project’s exceptional engineering complexity and the advanced technical expertise required for its successful design and implementation.
